This is tour report for the “Next-Gen Genomics & Bioinformatics Technologies (NGBT) Conference 2014” during 17th to 19th of Nov at NIMHANS, Bangalore, INDIA hosted by SciGenom. Location : The Conference was held at the “Convention Hall” [one of the best designed conference hall I have ever seen] of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, India. It was indeed very suitable for such an event. The place was technologically equipped, the location was easily accessible for me, both by public transportation and by car, with adequate parking space. Although I stayed in hotel The Chancery Pavilion, I can assume that the transportation to/from the Conference was equally easy for all the participants. My role : To deliver a guest lecture on “Challenges to analyse metagenomic data” during session-10 of the workshop which is focusing on “Metagenomics/Protist genomics”. The session was chaired by Dr. B. Chatoo. He appreciated the talk and healthy discussion with participants was proof of that. Dr. Yougesh shouche and Dr. Arnab Pain were two other speakers in this session. Talks & Posters: I attended various lectures and technical sessions during the conference. I understand that the conference was planned to have many participants to promote awareness of the next generation sequencing technologies among the research community in India. It was very interesting and illustrative of the struggle to determine the boundaries of an emerging scientific area. I attended several talks and enjoyed most of them, although the topics of some sessions diverged too much from my idea of what conference should be, e.g. the “Animal /Conservation Genomics and Translational research / Drug development” session. I had the chance to talk to a few people about my research and get some interesting ideas on more applied directions. I got aware with recent innovations in field of NGS through a superb lecture of Dr. Steven Turner, an innovator of PacBio Single Molecule Sequencing. I found many of the posters really interesting and I had the chance to talk to some of the authors. Overall, it was, for me, a very good opportunity to present our work and receive feedback from a multi-disciplinary audience. It is also, a forum of established people in their domains which I have found very stimulating. All in all, it was a very educational experience and it was really great looking at how different disciplines fit together. Best thing about conference : An event, starting from short inaugural function, informative technical sessions and grand valedictory function were completed timely as per scheduled plan. Because I personally believe “Time is the most valuable thing a man can spend”. As a conclusion, it was tremendously amazing listening to talks from various experts, getting involved in discussion with people from a mixture of disciplines having the same interests in genomics, as well as building networks for future collaboration. Overall the Conference was highly interesting with the opportunity to talk to or hear from a wide variety of people; in particular those from outside animal Science. We have a tendency to get wrapped up in the technology and it's fascinating to get a clear non-technical point of view on the animal genomics from people in other fields.
